Provenance Verification
ArtChek enables you to verify whether a work of art or object has been reported as stolen, lost, or subject to claims.
This check reduces legal and commercial risk in transactions and demonstrates genuine due diligence. If no issues emerge, a certificate is issued confirming the absence of reports in the databases consulted at the date of verification.
Why carry out a verification
For buyers
A verification helps avoid acquiring problematic assets. In some cases, it brings to light provenance information that directly affects value, marketability, and the risk of future disputes.
For sellers or intermediaries
It strengthens contractual positioning and builds trust with the counterparty. A documented verification reduces the risk of litigation and improves transaction transparency.

The verification is carried out by specialists with experience in the art market and in due diligence.
Minimum requirements
To obtain the certificate, you must provide at least:
- current owner or holder
- type of collection (private, gallery, institution)
- location
- date of acquisition
Where available, prior provenance should also be included.
For certain high-risk categories, such as works created before 1945 or archaeological objects, more detailed information may be required. If sufficient data is not provided, the certificate may not be issued.
Timing
The aim is to complete the verification within 10–20 working days.
Timing may vary depending on:
- completeness of the information provided
- type of object
- need for further research in specific archives
Checks involving high-risk assets require more extensive analysis.
Costs and conditions
The fee is charged for the verification activity, regardless of the outcome.
If elements emerge that require further investigation, Artchek will indicate the necessary additional steps and any extra costs before proceeding.
A key point
The value of a certificate depends on the quality of the information on which it is based.
For this reason, Artchek does not issue certifications where data is incomplete or cannot be verified.

How do I initiate a search request?
You can start a search directly from the dedicated page using the start button, or by accessing your personal account and entering the artwork details.
What are the fees for searches?
Costs vary depending on the number of checks requested:
- 1 search: €120
- 2 to 6 searches: €95 each
- more than 6 searches: €75 each
All amounts are exclusive of VAT, where applicable.
Do you offer solutions for auction houses or art fairs?
Yes. For operators handling large volumes, fees are calculated based on the number of lots or works examined over the course of the year.
Is it possible to request an urgent search?
Yes. A priority service is available for urgent requests. To activate it, you must contact us in advance at urgent@artcheck.art, providing the details of the artwork. Once all necessary information has been received, the search can be completed within 24–48 working hours.
Can I upgrade a standard search to urgent?
Yes. If you have already submitted a request, you can upgrade it to urgent by paying a surcharge on the initial fee.
What checks are carried out during the search?
The verification is not limited to a single database. Multiple specialized sources, archives, and international databases are consulted, supplemented by analysis conducted by specialists based on the type of artwork and its provenance.
Can I request a search without knowing the full provenance?
Yes, provided that the minimum information about the artwork and current ownership is available. In the absence of clear provenance, processing times may be slightly longer.
Is the certificate always issued?
In most cases, yes, if no issues emerge. However, issuance is not automatic: it may be denied if essential information is missing or if concerns arise regarding provenance.
Why is this type of verification important?
This check is an essential component of due diligence in the art market. It reduces legal risks and demonstrates good faith in the event of disputes.
Does the certificate guarantee that the artwork is “safe”?
No database can be 100% complete. However, the certificate provides tangible evidence that a thorough verification has been carried out in line with industry standards.
What happens if an artwork is found to be problematic?
If reports or claims emerge, the applicant’s cooperation is required to manage the situation. As a general rule, you will be asked not to move the artwork until the matter is resolved.
